Easy mountaineering tour for beginners with an overnight stay at Lämmerenhütte SAC

Adventure Date: 3rd - 4th of September 2022

Do you want to take hiking to the next level and start mountaineering? This is your opportunity to join a beginner’s mountaineering tour to an alpine peak with incredible views. The Wildstrubel stands at 3’244 meters above sea level and can be reached by ascending from the Lämmerenhütte via the main glacier. This tour is led by a certified mountain guide who will be responsible for your safety.

The Wildstrubel is a special mountain. Even though it is not part of the majestic 4’000 meters club, it is standing right across the Valley from some of the most beautiful summits in Switzerland. For this reason, among others, we have selected this fantastic summit for our next beginner’s tour. Speaking of which, the interest in our Piz Medel tour has been overwhelming. The five available spots were booked out in a flash! Make sure to secure your spot if you are planning to join this tour

Like our other mountaineering tours, this trip is split into an arrival day and a summit day. On the arrival day, we hike to our base camp. In this case, the Lämmerenhütte. Unlike other tours though, there are two trails we can choose from to get to the hut. The short hike originates in Leukerbad and makes use of a gondola to cover some of the altitude. After the gondola ride, it is only a short hike of about 5 kilometers to get to our overnight cabin. The longer tour starts in Kandersteg and makes use of the Sunnbüehl gondola. The hike from the Kandersteg side is a lot longer, covering about 13 kilometers and about 700 meters of ascend. Without breaks, it may take us around four hours. Plan A is to take the longer route through Kandersteg on Saturday, but in case the weather is unstable, we may choose to travel through Leukerbad instead. You can also choose to take the shorter route by yourself in case you do not want to join the longer hike on Saturday. The hike to the Lämmerenhut is only classified as T3. Exact travel times will be discussed with all participants, but please be aware that the full Saturday I can also recommend travel to Leukerbad on Friday night and use the Saturday morning to do Switzerland’s longest Via Ferrata! Careful though, it is classified as K6, extremely hard! Read more about it here.

From our Trip to the Sustenhorn

Alpine Tour Itinerary

Since the hike to the hut is relatively short, we can plan to start around mid-day from Kandersteg or early afternoon from Leukerbad and still reach the hut with spare time before dinner. The exact meeting time and point will be shared closer to the event and will depend on factors such as weather forecast. As in all SAC huts, dinner and breakfast are included in the overnight price. However, drinks and extra expenses are not included in the tour price. The Lämmerenhütte is located at an altitude of 2’502 meters above sea level. A variety of alpine tours can be started from this fantastic location. Our tour goal will be the summit of Wildstrubel, classified as an easy tour on the Swiss scale. This means that no technical experience is required. Most of the way crosses a glacier field, where the main concern is crevasses. And for this reason, a mountain guide will lead the tour. If you like the tour, you may want to think about more advanced trips in the future! Read here about our trip last year to the Sustenhorn!

After reaching the summit of Wildstrubel, we will be descending past the hut again and then via Gemmipass to Leukerbad. The starting and end point of the tour may not be same location. For this reason, travel by public transport is recommended. Additionally, you may want to get a day pass GA, as train tickets to and from the event are not included – but this will be discussed in the Event Whatsapp group, which will be opened shortly before the event.

"At the end of June, we finally met again for another high alpine tour. Ever since my first 4’000 meter summit last year, I knew I wanted to repeat the feeling. And while the Clariden is not above 4k, the scenery surrounding it is just as beautiful."
